Princess Anne hounds met at Sandy Point State Forest which is one of our newest fixtures. The adjacent property is home of Olympian Bernie Traurig and his wife Caitlin and they served the Stirrup Cup and potluck tailgate.

Junior Day at Capitol

Once again, Juniors were invited to the January General Assembly. This has been a HUGE hit with our Legislators! For the 2026 Legislative Session, Fox Hunter Junior Day at The Capitol was on Friday, January 23rd. Rappahannock Hunt was recognized for its 100th year anniversary.

PAH FALL HUNTER PACE 2025 SUCCESS

It was a beautiful, 60 degree day for 32 teams consisting of 92 riders to compete in the 2023 Princess Anne Hunt Fall Hunter Pace, a part of the Fall Hunter Pace Series conducted with 7 other Virginia MFHA Hunts. A hunter pace is an exciting and competitive gathering that tests the skills and teamwork of riders and their horses over a cross country course. Participants are tasked with completing a predetermined course at a controlled pace, aiming to achieve the optimum or fastest time depending on the division. Horses and riders that participate in a hunter pace can expect an experience that mimics the pace and obstacles met in a typical day of fox hunting.

The 2025 PAH hunter pace course contained 20 jumps and covered 7.8 miles through our beautiful hunt countryside in Charles City, Virginia. This year, we offered four competitive divisions: Optimum Time on the Flat, Optimum Time Over Fences, Fastest Time on The Flat, and Fastest Time Over Fences.

HUNT SEASON PREPARATION

Now is the time to get both you and your horse prepared for the upcoming hunt season that is right around the corner. Waiting for the leaves to fall is too late!

Rider

Time to cut down on those summer sweets and umbrella drinks and get some cardio-vascular exercise. If we expect our horses to be fit, so should we. Biking, yoga, jogging, and walking out hounds at kennels are all a wake-up call to those muscles in summer mode. Check your hunt clothes and make sure they are clean; buttons and stitching are good and appropriate (check PAH website for attire) to fit your fabulous figure.

Horse

Time to get those marvelous steeds out of the field and back to work. Think of what problems you may have had last season and address them. Call the vet and get a checkup (teeth, shots, coggins, worming) and a lameness evaluation. Often, those attitude problems can be attributed to pain. Clean them up by pulling mane, trim, and get shoes. You should be riding AT LEAST 2x a week. Best fitness for horse and rider is trotting. Incorporate hills, ditches, water crossings, and jumping gymnastics. Break up your riding routine (whether on trails or ring) into 3 equal portions of warm-up, training and cool down. Doing these suggestions will make for a more enjoyable hunt season for both horse and rider. Remember. The outside of the horse is good for the inside of the person!

Tack

Time to get that green mold off the tack and check for weak points and stitching. Make sure your saddle and girth fit your horse correctly making adjustments due to weigh changes. Correctly adjust your bridle and bit to your horses needs. Thoroughly give your tack a good cleaning and oiling before the season starts. Cleaning your tack well now, makes for easier regular cleaning after each hunt.

Remember, being properly appointed shows respect for yourself, the Masters, the landowners and the traditions of foxhunting

CHECK LIST

Rider:

- exercise-bike, yoga, jog, walk out hounds

Horse:

Reflections on the State of Princess Anne Hunt, from the Annual Meeting

As we officially close out the year and begin to get ready for our 99^th season, I’d like to say a few last words, some of which were shared at our annual meeting in May. See photos HERE. First, thank you to Master Merri Musso and her team of volunteers for coordinating a beautiful and fun meeting and Kentucky Derby party at Dogham Farm. Gil Calkins won Most Dapperly Dressed; Kim Burnett won Best Hat; and Mark Wenger did a great job keeping our Jefferson cups filled with the Mint Juleps we love.

During the business meeting, Natasha Gealey was voted in as a new Director and has volunteered to be our 2026 Hunt Ball Chair! Lisa Langenhennig is our new Vice President, and Rachel Toquothty was elected for another term as Secretary. Many thanks to outgoing Board Member Jerel Johnson for his years of service and leadership with our trail clearing efforts.

I’d like to personally welcome these new Board members along with Jim Daniels, who was elected as our new Board President. I know they will all do a great job working with Alex Cromer, Joe Svetina, Tim Watson, our Masters and leadership. A member of PAH since 2005, Jim Daniels has served many years on the Board of Directors, most recently as Vice President; and he has served in the field as the Second Flight Field Master. Jim is a graduate of William and Mary and owner of Longest and Daniels Realtors in Chester. In the community, Jim has decades of experience as a community leader. Highlights include serving on the Vestry at Westover Church; as past president of the Chesterfield Historical Society, the Central Chesterfield Kiwanis Club, and the Chester Business Association; and he is a charter member of both the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and the Jeff Davis Association.

I am deeply grateful for your support while I’ve been President of the Board. The Board of Directors is charged with making sure that Princess Anne Hunt is financially sound, and many things contribute to that end. We face challenges every year, but in the last four years, we’ve been able to work together to strengthen Princess Anne Hunt in some significant ways.

We started by honing our focus with our first Mission Statement and Core Values. We lightened the load on volunteers by implementing event teams; hiring an outside bookkeeper; and setting up online payments for dues and events. We strengthened our financial position with record Hunt Ball fundraising, replenishment of the Hunt Preservation Fund, and continued growth in our membership. We have stayed connected with equestrians and friends in the community with a robust Spring Trail riding series; hunts that feature scheduled tailgates, stirrup cups and breakfasts; numerous foxhunting clinics; and a Junior Day whose attendance rivals Opening Meet! Communications are steady and reliable with weekly eNews, increased FaceBook friends and posts, website updates, and the addition of our Hunt Season Booklet, now spearheaded by Master Merri Musso, the newest addition to a dedicated team of Masters. Your investments have helped to improve the hounds’ daily lives with safer, more comfortable beds, exercise yards and a puppy whelping lodge that is being built now. And very importantly, we reach out to landowners throughout the year in numerous ways to show appreciation for allowing us to continue this special tradition of fox chasing in the historic territory where our forefathers have hunted since Colonial times.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with a Board of Directors, Huntsman, Staff, Masters, and a membership that are collectively known for their warmth, kindness, hospitality, and good sport. I look forward to closing out the centennial with a bang with a hunt club that is in great shape and has a very bright future.

HOUND SHOWS 2025

PAH kicked off this showing season at The Carolinas’ Show in Southern Pines, NC, Saturday May 10^th

With the hunt truck and trailer packed to the hilt, and loaded with hounds, Martyn, Allison and Rachel, the entourage departed Friday morning and, once hounds were settled in their temporary kennels, the evening Welcome party was underway; Martyn won the Horn Blowing competition!

Hounds all showed exceptionally well the following day, winning every one of their classes, culminating in Martyn’s first Grand Champion award with Wilton!

Hounds shown were Scholar, Student, Sparky, Wilton, Wishbone, Strauss, Dynamo, Wizard, Admiral, Scarlett, Willow, Audrey, Mischief, Huzzah, Hudel and Wanted.

The Virginia Hound Show is always on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Even though it’s an honor to take part in the beautiful grounds of Morven Park, Leesburg, Martyn’s hounds never seem to do as well as in other shows. However, it was a great experience for the unentered hounds, and the members and guests who came to the PAH hospitality tent had a great time, including Mary Finney who won the Fancy Hat contest the evening before.

Unfortunately, Dynamo came out lame Sunday morning so he didn’t show and Admiral chewed some wire clips on a kennel panel, escaped and took himself on a jaunt around the grounds! Dexter took flight too. Subsequently, PAH had to pull out of the Pack Class and there were 3 hounds down! The escapees were caught, eventually!

The following Saturday, May 31^st was the Bryn Mawr show held in the grounds of the Radnor Hunt Club, Malvern, PA. The team departed for the long trek north Friday morning. This has always been Martyn’s favorite show and it was another success!

Champion English Foxhound was a recently imported, and beautiful, bitch called Rescue.

Champion Old English Foxhound was Wilton and Wanted was winner of the Veterans Class.

Another year of showing is concluded for our hounds. The start of the hunting season ‘25/’26 is just over 2 months away!!

It is that time of year again when we compose our annual Hunt Booklet! And this year it is our 99th Season! This booklet is your “Go to” resource for information about foxhunting, Princess Anne Hunt events, leadership, etiquette, and many services you need in the community. One of our largest fundraisers, it offers various opportunities from the “Friends of Hounds” page to quarter, half and full-page ads to corporate sponsorships for you to show your support for PAH and/or advertise your business.

The booklet is given to hundreds of people including all of our membership and landowners. It's also distributed at PAH events like our foxhunting clinics, hunter paces, horse shows, tack shops, and our many fixtures. This booklet is a valuable educational piece for PAH members and guests and the community year-round; it's a lovely coffee table book; and it showcases area businesses and individual supporters.

Please keep this in mind as you consider how YOU can support this important fundraiser for our horses and hounds this summer. We encourage you to reach out to friends with businesses and vendors you use and ask them to join you as well. The contract and ad specifics are attached.

Thank you to all of the volunteers and riders who joined Princess Anne Hunt for an enjoyable day of riding and competition at the PAH kennels. Special thanks go out to Martyn Blackmore for the incredible course and exceptional marking and to Sue Blackmore for a peaceful and refreshing midway rest stop. Without the help of our many volunteers, the day would not have run so smoothly.

Puppy Whelping Lodge

INVESTING IN OUR PACK: NEW PUPPY WHELPING LODGE

& ENGLISH HOUND IMPORTS

Due to the generosity of numerous Raise-the-Paddle donors at the Hunt Ball, funding was secured for a new Puppy Whelping Lodge. Construction will start in the next 30 days! Designed by PAH member and Hunt Veterinarian Tom Wood, together with PAH Huntsman Martyn Blackmore, this structure will provide a sterile and safe environment for new and expecting mothers and their puppies. The goal is to expand our breeding program. This will give us more entered hounds from which to choose, so that we can continue to improve our bloodlines, which improves hunting.

This structure will also make it possible to isolate any sick or recovering hounds if/when that is needed, so that we can keep the overall PAH pack healthy and safe. The timing of this structure could not be more critical, as we are working now to import four (4) bred bitches from England to jump start our breeding program for 2025. This will help to strengthen our pack of English foxhounds and improve hunting as well. On Saturday, March 15th, Kingsmill on the James in Williamsburg provided a beautiful setting on a lovely spring evening, complete with a phenomenal dinner that truly satisfied. With 100 guests in attendance, En'ovation kept us dancing all night. PAH 2nd Annual Junior Meet

For the second year in a row, PAH held a Junior Meet on March 1st at Westover Plantation. The weather was finally friendly for this event. Hunting was fantastic as well as Huntsman Martyn Blackmore brought great sport with the PAH foxhounds.

As a new tradition for the second year, PAH Masters award a Junior with "Best Horse and Rider Combination" This year was awarded to Victoria Wood!

THE HUNT PRESERVATION FUND

THE HUNT PRESERVATION FUND

The Hunt Preservation Fund was started in 2018 to help Princess Anne Hunt meet one-time capital expenses that are outside of the operating budget, as well as respond to emergencies. Membership dues, fundraisers, and the annual Hunt Ball funds the day-to-day needs of the Huntsman, hounds and horses.

Initially, this fund paid for the down payment on the Huntsman’s house, installation of a new septic field, a new pick-up truck, a new horse trailer, and tracking collars for the hounds. More recently, these funds were used for kennel improvements for hound safety and comfort as well as their much-needed exercise yards. In 2025, hunt preservation funds will be used to help build a puppy shelter to house our beloved and precious puppies in a safer and healthier environment.

Please consider supporting Princess Anne Hunt's Hunt Preservation Fund.

All combined gifts of $500+ to the Hunt Preservation fund from 2018 to April 30, 2025, will be recognized on a plaque at the kennels in perpetuity. Thank you for your consideration of this important effort that supports our Huntsman, horses and hounds.

PRINCESS ANNE HOSTS FIRST MEET OF VIRGINIA HUNT WEEK, HOUNDS MET AT DOGHAM, WED. OCT. 23

Fourteen Virginia hunts enthusiastically agreed to host a meet, in their home countries, for this annual event of consecutive days of hunting – and technically it was two weeks - with the final meet being November 7^th.

Unfortunately, PAH huntsman, Martyn Blackmore, had incurred a most debilitating torn hamstring injury whilst hunting two weeks prior to our meet. He made a few phone calls and secured Tim Michel, Bull Run Huntsman, as a substitute to hunt the PAH hounds off of staff horse, Windsor.

Tim rose to the challenge and did an outstanding job! It was a testament to Martyn’s dedicated training and care of his hounds which allowed them to easily and seamlessly accept, listen, and adhere to an unknown huntsman’s leadership and guidance.

They found on the first draw, opening on a coyote, which ran out of country, crossing Route 5 after giving the field a good run. The warm, dry day, with heavy leaf fall, led to a challenging scenting day, but 12½ couple of hounds worked extremely well, and hounds (and staff) diligently persevered. After all available country was drawn, and with the temperature fast rising, hounds were soon at a loss and the decision to end the day was nearly called when they found again. Either a fresh coyote or the original one caught on his way home, and the entire pack ran this one all the way back to the mighty James river. A great end to the over 3-hour day. All hounds were on before arriving back at the trailers, for which Tim was most thankful! This allowed every participant to partake of a fabulous breakfast in the cool cellar of Dogham Farm.

Visitors from other hunts greatly enjoyed our scenic territory on the river, and getting to stay close to hounds to see them work. According to a hardcore group of Virginia hunters who attended every meet, Princess Anne had the best hospitality, friendliest people, and best post-hunt socializing!

A Thanksgiving-inspired lunch will be provided in the Clubhouse following hunting by member and chef extraordinaire Kris Goeckeritz with help from our event team of the day. Participate in the flask-tasting contest. All entrants should bring enough for at least 50 people to have a small taste. All guests can vote!

It is a rare opportunity and privilege to be able to witness the pursuit of the hounds on foot and up close --as if YOU are a part of the pack! -- and we hope you will join the fun.

This year's Princess Anne Hunt Hunter Pace was held on Sunday October 27th and featured 100 riders and 34 teams. Teams competed over a 7.8 mile course on the scenic and historical land of Sherwood Forest Plantation, courtesy of the Tyler Family.

We featured the following divisions: Fast Time Over Fences, Fast Time on the Flat, Optimum Time Over Fences, and Optimum Time on the Flat. Teams were composed of 2-5 riders and were tasked with self-navigating the course following the markers designated. Click HERE to see the times and results. HUNT SEASON PREPARATION

Now is the time to get both you and your horse prepared for the upcoming hunt season that is right around the corner. Waiting for the leaves to fall is too late!

Time to cut down on those summer sweats and umbrella drinks and get some cardio-vascular exercise. If we expect our horses to be fit, so should we. Biking, yoga, jogging, walking out hounds at kennels are all a wake-up call to those muscles in summer mode. Check your hunt clothes and make sure they are clean; buttons and stitching are good and appropriate (check PAH website for attire) to fit your fabulous figure.

Back in the fall of ’22, a couple of friends from NC came to visit and hunt with us. They brought another couple along and we were introduced to Ian and his fiancée, Shannon. Our new friends, who hunt with Red Mountain Hounds, had such an enjoyable time hunting as guests with PAH and, after hearing from Martyn of his desire to have grass (exercise) yards for the hounds, Ian generously offered his professional services, for no payment, to erect the fencing using the materials saved from a previous grass yard, that was taken down to get the huntsman’s house in situ. My, was the huntsman happy!

It was mid-July of ’23 when Ian, Shannon and a stock trailer full of necessary tools arrived. It turned out to be the hottest week of the summer but they, along with Martyn and a committed team of PAH members and staff, toiled for three days of blood (sometimes) sweat (constantly) and tears (some) in 90 degree plus weather until, due to not quite enough materials, the foreman ordered “down tools” Not one store in the area had what was needed to complete Ian’s project so, consequently, he and Shannon headed back to NC.

Due to Life getting in the way, for all parties involved, it was not until the first day of March, this year, that the now married couple, Ian and Shannon, returned with the materials to finish the fencing and with a gang, again of PAH people, got the job done in one day.

These grass yards, one for the bitches and one for the dogs, will be for hounds to be turned out in whilst their lodges and yards are being cleaned up, so will never be left unattended. This playtime will not replace their daily exercise, and they will still be walked out, once they are fed back in their kennels, every morning.

We are eternally grateful to Ian and Shannon and PAH welcomes them back whenever they can get here, and when certain life events are not an issue!

THE MAUSTELLER PERPETUAL AWARD

The Mausteller Perpetual Award is in honor of Ex-MFH Dee Dee Mausteller, who served as Master of Foxhounds with PAH from 2012-2023. Her ceaseless dedication to hounds, hunting and staff was remarkable. Dee Dee was the hero behind the scenes many times and enforcer of proper etiquette and codes of hunting. This trophy is given annually at Closing Meet to an Honorary Staff member who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to the hounds and hunting.

HUNT BUTTONS & COLORS

The privilege of wearing a hunt’s buttons and/or distinctive collar is awarded at the discretion of the Masters. It’s an honor, and also brings with it responsibility for the wearer. It means the Masters consider you a valued member of the hunt, based on your participation year 'round in supporting the hunt, and your abilities in the hunt field. Other riders should be able to look to you for assistance in the field during a hunting day. You know the country, and the landowners, and help to keep them happy. Prerequisites may include hunting regularly to gain knowledge of the hunt country, participating in Hunt events, and assisting with the affairs of the Hunt. Any member awarded colors should, in the opinion of the Masters, be a person knowledgeable of Foxhunting etiquette, and a proficient rider, who when hunting with any Hunt, would be a good representative for PAH. Buttons and Colors may be awarded by the Masters at any time during the year.

Members who have been awarded BUTTONS are entitled to wear black “P.A.H.” buttons on their hunt coat.

Members who have been awarded their COLORS are entitled to wear the PAH colors (Apple Green) on their collar and “P.A.H.” buttons on their hunt coat. Gentlemen and Staff can wear a pink coat, as well as different boot tops (brown for anyone wearing a pink coat and black patent leather for ladies).

MFHA FAIRLY HUNTED AWARD

The MFHA Fairly Hunted Award acknowledges juniors 18 and under who participate in mounted hunting with hounds.

Each year, the award is presented by the PAH Masters on behalf of the Masters of Foxhounds Association to any junior who has hunted with PAH 5+ times during that season. Recipients receive an MFHA pin, a Certificate of Achievement, and a 1-year subscription to the MFHA magazine: Covertside.

Many thanks to all volunteers, auction donors, auction bidders, and guests who made the 97th Annual Princess Anne Hunt Ball our highest netting Hunt Ball EVER!! Together, we entertained 132 landowners, members and guests and ....

You heard it here first: raised at least $59,000 for the hounds!!

How wonderful to be able to secure the funds needed to supplement our membership dues while having so much fun! During our highest grossing Raise-the-paddle ever, we came $4,000 shy of raising the $19,000 needed to reach our $50,000 goal for the Hunt Preservation Fund this year.

The live auction, offered guests vacations in the US and abroad as well as some pretty special experiences at home. Winners will enjoy vacations at Massanutten, the Outer Banks, Portugal, Idaho, and Montana. Twenty guests will be going with Martyn to Exmoor, England September 1; 10 will dine with the Masters; 10 will get a VIP tent and lunch with Polo; 16 will be playing Croquet on the lawn at Westover.

There are a few spots left for a book discussion with Rita Mae Brown at Evelynton on May 11; as well as a professional portrait session with you and your horse on June 1. The Commonwealth Club provided a beautiful backdrop and meal; with signature drinks "The Blazing Saddle" and the "Desert Rose" created by Troy Arnold. It's always a favorite venue of ours.

Natasha and Brian Gealey did an excellent job putting together a slideshow of photos from our season of hunting. We appreciate Joe and Julia Svetina for providing their wonderful photos! We also can't forget Martha Culpepper, Master Merrie Musso, Hillary Robertson, and Tim Watson for their help throughout; Katherine Mitchell for curating the Auction; Robin Daniels for donating all the raffle items; Lisa Lannenhennig for help with auction posters; and Ryan Fitzgerald for securing discounted accommodations for guests.

Many came prepared to dance, from attending a Country Dance Class the week before the ball coordinated by Christel Stanley. The band, En’novation, secured by Debbie and Doug Hackman, was a blast and the dance floor was full until the band finished at 11 pm.

It was a joyful conclusion to our 97th Hunt Season, and we look forward to more fun with Princess Anne Hunt in the coming months (Trail Ride, anyone?). We’ll stay in touch through e-mail, our website and Facebook.

And not even Sister knows about his latest tawdry scandal. Then there is Crawford Howard, a Yankee in a small town where Rebel bloodlines are sacred. Still, Crawford has money---lots of it---and as Sister is well aware, maintaining a first-class hunt club is far from cheap.

With the competition flaring up, Southern gentility flies out the window. Fontaine and Crawford will stop at nothing to discredit each other. GIVE TO THE HUNT PRESERVATION FUND

As we enjoy our 97th season of foxhunting the historic properties and farmlands of Charles City and beyond, the Princess Anne Hunt Board of Directors hopes that you will consider supporting Princess Anne Hunt's Hunt Preservation Fund.

In 2018, Master Ed Mitchell, with the support of the Board and generous members, raised $130,000 to establish this fund for capital needs and emergencies. Since then, the Hunt Preservation Fund has paid for the down payment on the Huntsman’s house, installation of a new septic field, new pick-up truck and horse trailer, kennel improvements for hound safety and comfort, the acquisition of a new horse; and tracking collars for the hounds.

Thanks to membership dues and successful Hunt Balls over the last few years, our operating budget is in great shape, so the day-to-day needs of the Huntsman, hounds and horses are being met. The Hunt Preservation Fund must be replenished to be able to continue to meet necessary capital expenses that are outside of the operating budget. The PAH Board is seeking to raise $50,000 over the next two fiscal years--which run May 1-April 30-- for the Hunt Preservation Fund. This will position Princess Anne Hunt for financial strength as we approach our 100th anniversary.

These funds will be used to complete the much-needed exercise yards for the hounds; roof repairs for the horse stable, additional kennel improvements, maintenance and eventual replacement of the truck and trailer; emergency needs, and more.

All of the PAH Board of Directors have made pledges to this important campaign. We hope that you will join us and make a gift to the Hunt Preservation Fund. Princess Anne Hunt's 97th Opening Meet

Princess Anne Hunt's 97th formal season began with Opening Meet on Saturday, November 11th at Sherwood Forest, home of President John Tyler. Veterans were honored by Colonel Claudia Sands, USAF (retired) and Chaplain Tim Porter who gave the Blessing of the Hounds before mounting his horse to enjoy the day's hunt. Riders wore poppy lapel pins in honor of veterans present, as well as past.

The cold early morning and the forecast high temperature in the 60’s, promised for a good day of hunting. Special occasion meets don’t usually yield great sport; however, eventually a fox was viewed, and hollered away, across Mariwood drive, away from the river and towards Mapsico creek. All the hounds opened on the line and a chase ensued. Unfortunately, field members were not able to follow the fast disappearing pack and headed back to the Lyon’s Den tailgate.

Our hosts William and Kay Tyler joined us for the day, along with Harrison Tyler, the grandson of President Tyler, for his 95th birthday. About 45 riders hunted that day and 100 guests attended the Stirrup Cup and Tailgate. Breakfast was catered by Defazio's Catering and an almond amaretto birthday cake was made by Robin Daniels. All were organized by the Opening Meet event team: Bonnie and Brad Smallwood; Terri Shiffer and David Howard; Elaine Honeycutt; Christine Sweet; Cynthia and Tim Porter and the Sherwood Forest team. 2023 Fall Hunter Pace

IT WAS a beautiful, 85 degree, day for 20 teams consisting of 65 riders, to compete in the 2023 PAH Fall Hunter Pace, a part of the VA Fall Hunter Pace Series, conducted with 7 other VA based MFHA hunts.
A hunter pace is an exciting and competitive gathering that tests the skills and teamwork of riders and their horses over a cross country course.
Participants are tasked with completing a predetermined course, at a controlled pace, aiming to achieve the optimum or fastest time, depending on the division. Those who take part in a hunter pace can expect an experience that mimics the pace and obstacles that one would encounter on a typical day of fox hunting.

This year's course contained over 20 jumps and covered 7.5 miles through our wonderful hunt countryside in Charles City. There were 4 divisions: Optimum Time on the Flat, Optimum Time over Fences, Fastest Time on the Flat and Fastest Time over Fences.

“A” rated Warrenton Horse Show over this past Labor Day weekend. Courtenay finished 6 th in the Fox

Hunter 31-45 category and 3 rd in the Team Pairs competition joining forces with Deep Run Hunt Club.

Courtenay has been participating in various events in preparation for the upcoming prestigious Filed

Hunter Championships of which she hopes to represent PAH proudly again.

Pictured above is Courtenay on her 6-yearold Irish Sport Horse “Shanbally” (barn name) and competing

under the show name “Ludo”. All horses entered must be fairly hunted – meaning a Field Master signs

off on the horse completing a minimum of 7 hunts of at least 2 ½ hour duration.

The Warrenton Horse Show Association, founded in 1899, is one of the oldest equestrian exhibitions of

its kind in the United States. Sunday is the culmination of the 5-day event with “Hunt Night”, and many

Virginia Hunt clubs having tailgate parties along the show ring rail. Excitement peaks with Hunt Staff,

Corinthian Class and Hunt Teams being the last 3 competitions.

Annual Meeting; Hound Show; and MFHA Junior Judging Competition

About 50 members and guests joined the Board of Directors on Sunday at Upper Shirley Plantation to toast the new PAH year; learn about how things went last year and participate in a PAH hound show with Martyn and Sue Blackmore. We were greeted by host Suzy Dameron with Upper Shirley champagne and the news that her first grandchild had just been born. About 70 percent of the event teams for 2023-2024 were filled at the meeting by volunteers. Katherine will be reaching out to you this summer to sign up if you weren't able to be there.

We all marked the occasion of the traditional "changing of the guard". Mark Wenger and Cynthia Porter concluded their terms as Board Directors as did Elaine Honneycutt who finished her term as secretary. We thank them so very much for their service on the Board and Christine Sweet for her service as Membership Chair. One of the most significant appointments of the year was the appointment of Merri Musso as our new Master, joining Travis Gibson, MFH and Ed Mitchell, MFH. This is the team of Masters who will work with PAH leadership to position Princess Anne Hunt for our next century of hunting. Merri was on the nominating committee this year with Katherine Mitchell and Jerel Johnson. She oversaw the vote of Jim Daniels to the Board as Director; Rachel Toquothty as Secretary; Robin Somers-Strom as Vice President and Membership Chair; and Katherine Mitchell for another term as President.

Other details from the business meeting and highlights from the year can be found HERE in the minutes from the meeting which includes the president's report; Hounds and Hunting; the Membership report; theTrail Ride Series; and the Treasurer's Report by Tim Watson. Tim shared the numbers for last year and the news that due to inflationary increases in expenses there will be a 6 percent increase in membership dues next year, beginning in August. This is the first increase since 2019.

Following the business meeting, Master Travis Gibson introduced the PAH Hound show and our first MFHA Junior Judging Competition. Participating were Steven Cardoza, John Savage, Evan Savage and Sophia Savage. Professional Judge, Matthew Cook, the Huntsman with Farmington Hunt. Eight PAH hounds competed. Members were also given judging sheets and encouraged to see if they could match scores with the professional judge. Sophia Savage won the junior judging competition. She was invited to participate in the Junior handling class at the Virginia Hound Show on Sunday, May 28th.

After the hound show, members and guests enjoyed refreshments made by the Board of Directors and a landowners bar, manned by Mark Wenger with help from Steve Musso. We all did a good job demolishing the almond amaretto cake made by Robin Daniels who also had PAH merchandise for sale. Hunt Ball 2023-Breakfast at Tiffany’s/Burlington

Many thanks to all volunteers, auction donors and bidders who made the 96th annual hunt ball such an enjoyable evening and successful fundraiser. Together, we entertained a record 142 landowners, members and guests, and raised a record $42,000 for the hounds! How wonderful to be able to secure the funds needed to supplement our membership dues while having so much fun! The caterer was impressed by the amount of wine and spirits we drank. Thank you Ed Mitchell and Troy Arnold for making sure we had enough for the evening!

Dee Dee Mausteller, MFH, was recognized by the Masters for her years of service and given a silver tray from the Board of Directors on behalf of the membership as a parting gift as she retires as Master this year. Dee Dee is moving out of the area to North Carolina, but will remain a member... and on speed dial.

Natasha and Brian Gealey did an excellent job, with Merri Musso and Sue Blackmore's photos, putting together a slideshow of photos from our season of hunting. Thank you Joe Svetina and Julia Bowman for letting us use some of your photos as well. When you watch the slideshow, please note the donors of our 12 auction items and the Hunt Ball volunteers who are recognized in the beginning. Thank you to Marcy Molinaro who served as Hunt Ball Chair through January; oversaw the live auction; and worked with Linda Wenger, our invite designer, who came up with the graphics for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s theme.

One of the evening's highlights was the debut of a video that Master Ed Mitchell made with daughter Carolyn featuring scenes from the season:

You will notice the elegant Orchid centerpieces and Tiffany’s truffle party favors, inspired and made by Liz Elwell and Robin Somers-Strom with help from Robin Daniels. The live auction displays were designed by Christine Sweet with help from Judee and Gil Calkins. The band, En’novation, secured by Debbie and Doug Hackman was a blast and the dance floor was full until they finished at 11 pm.

Our signature blue champagne cocktail, Tiffany mimosas, set an elegant tone as everyone walked into Burlington, many for the first time. Burlington is a beautiful event venue right in the middle of our hunt territory. We were so lucky to have Madison Land who works at Burlington every day helping us to set up and break down; working with the caterer; and making sure that things ran smoothly the night of the event.

After the Ball, members opened their homes to folks to reduce the drive. We were lucky to have Rivers Rest close by as well. Many thanks to Granville for offering a discounted room rate AND transportation for guests to go safely to and from the Ball.

It was an elegant end to our 96th Hunt Season, and we look forward to more fun with Princess Anne Hunt in the coming months. We’ll stay in touch through e-mail, our website and Facebook.

Closing Meet for Princess Anne Hunt Written by Mary Finney

March 11, 2023 dawned chilly and breezy, but the sun was shining and excitement was high as dozens of horses and riders, as well as spectators gathered at Sherwood Forest for the Closing Meet of Princess Anne Hunt’s 96th season. This date was also the 90th birthday of the late Mrs. Paynie Tyler, a life-long patroness of our Hunt, to whom we will be forever grateful for her generosity and enduring, passionate support. The Tyler family continues to be a vital and treasured part of Princess Anne Hunt and we are so appreciative of their hosting us for Closing Meet. A prayer of remembrance and thanksgiving was offered and a wreath placed in Paynie’s honor.

The morning started with a wonderful Stirrup Cup at the Overseers’ Cottage, featuring delicious savory and sweet canapés, mimosas and port wine. Bonnie Smallwood, Brad Smallwood, Jaime Reid, Dennis and Liz Elwell, Kris Goekeritz, Nijole Bailey, and Brian Gealey passed refreshments to riders and guests, which were much enjoyed.

Two awards for exemplary service to the Hunt were given that morning. The Whitehurst Award, which is given annually to the member who has shown dedication and service to the Hunt over a period of many years, was presented to Katherine Mitchell, our brilliant and hard working President.

The newly christened Mausteller Award commemorates our own retiring MFH, Dee Dee Mausteller, who was an invaluable leader for our hunt for over two decades. This award will be given annually to a staff member who has shown consistent dedication and excellent service to the Huntsman, hounds, and the sport. This year it was presented to Mrs. Allison Harcourt, who has been a member of PAH since the 1970’s and is an irreplaceable asset with her vast experience and knowledge of all things hunting and hounds.

Two riding members were awarded their colors that morning: Mrs. Kris Goeckeritz and Mr. Steve Musso. Well done, and well deserved! Last, but not least, three junior members were presented the MFHA’s Fairly Hunted Award, which is recognizes achievement of youth 16 years old and under, in participating in mounted hunting with hounds at least 5 times during the season. Congratulations to Aly Corbett, Keira Courtney, and John Savage!

Hunting Report:

For the hounds, scenting on this windy day was difficult, and for the staff, hearing the hounds and the huntsman’s horn, was a challenge. As has become customary, when leaving the meet from Sherwood Forest, respects were paid to Paynie Tyler in the family cemetery. Martyn worked the hounds towards Lyon’s Den, and after about 45 minutes, was drawing through the recently cutover timber at Lyon’s Den working the lower ground that was more sheltered from the wind. The hounds found just south of the cutover and were quickly in full cry. But within seconds, the music had been drowned out by the wind – all we could hear was the sound of the tree tops thrashing in the winds. After a false start towards the river, we realized that the quarry – a coyote - had crossed Tyler’s Creek and was headed east towards Fort Pocahontas with the hounds in pursuit. It would be a 3 mile gallop for the field to double back to the crossing and try catch up. By noon, Martyn and staff had checked at Fort P. to collect hounds up together. A couple of hounds were able to stay on the coyote’s trail and were eventually picked up seven miles east at Sandy Point!

Second Flight and Mounted Hilltoppers made their way to the large and sumptuous Tailgate at the entrance to Lions Den where our hunt supporters greeted the field with smiles and refreshments. There were close to 50 spectators braving the wind and enjoying the pageantry. Kudos and many thanks to the organizers and volunteers for that: Sean and Therese O’Grady, Kris Goeckeritz, Vanessa Roselli, Mark Wenger, and so many others.

Meanwhile, back at Fort P., by 12:30, hounds had been gathered, and Martyn hunted back towards home. The hounds found between Sturgeon Point Road and Tyler’s Creek in heavy cover. But again, the wind made it impossible to hear the hounds, and with the thick cover, the quarry soon slipped away. With the wind still blowing hard and conditions difficult, the Masters called it a day and hounds were taken back to the kennels and First flight hacked back to the trailers. A busy day with many miles covered and at least two coyotes viewed.

After returning to the trailers at Sherwood Forest and making the horses warm and comfortable, Jen Martin and Master Travis kept an eye on our horses, so riders could head down the road to Breakfast at Indian Fields Tavern for a lovely catered breakfast. Kris Goeckeritz greeted us at the door; Debbie and Doug Hackman provided a fabulous musical duo, Featherstone and Tiller, that we enjoyed while chatting around the fire pit; drinking libations from the Indian Fields Bar Wagon; and enjoying the delicious buffet provided by owners Debbie and Pat Weller. All in all, it was a wonderful day of good sport and good friends! Here’s to another season!

Evelynton January 28 Hunt Fun!

On a beautiful day for hunting; riders, horses, hounds and guests gathered on the front field of Evelynton Plantation for a delightful stirrup cup to start the day off. All moved off as Huntsman Martyn Blackmore hunted some of Evelynton Plantation and continued on to the Ruffins Big Buckland. Car followers witnessed with perfect views of the days hunt from the topside of all the rolling fields of Big Buckland.

An abundant tailgate with lavish foods and drink adorned in silver was set up by the amazing event team of Steve and Merri Musso, Katherine Mitchell, Brett Whitsitt, Kim and Mark Burnett, Natasha and Brian Gaeley, Emily and Ed Pease, Vanessa Roselli, Brett, Gen Hahn, Kathy Huntsinger, Mary Stuart and "Leroy" the fox, Mary Pugh, and Amy and Kenzie Zydel. Many thanks for such a great team effort making the day delightful.

The hunt joined the tailgate on their way home . Then back to Evelynton for another extravagant potluck breakfast to top the wonderful day. No one went home hungry or thirsty.

And the Tyler family for sharing their family history with Princess Anne Hunt members and guests. Each tour was at capacity and all guests were thrilled to learn anecdotes about President Tyler; stories about the enslaved who supported the family; information about an 1842 foxhunt and breakfast; a view from the back patio that used to be of the river a mile away; information about Fannie, the enslaved woman who took care of the president's 15 children, beautiful portraits of the president, and our own Harrison, Paynie, William and Kay; a good ghost story; and more.

The Tally Ho Ho Ho on December 10th was a huge success!

Ninety attendees either on horseback, walking, side by sides, horse drawn carriages, and cars followed along Christmas caroling at five homes and the Vineyard. We started out at Doug & Debbie Hackman’s home then made our way through the trail to Jim & Mandy Peterson’s, Bill and Diane Nordt’s, Tom & Julie Waitman’s served Hot Chocolate, Shirley Plantation where Charles & Lauren Carter served hot cider & cookies, and lastly Upper Shirley Vineyard where Santa Clause, patrons, and Suzy Dameron came out to greet us while we sang Christmas carols to them.

Back to the Hackman’s home for a wonderful breakfast river side. The Eggnog contest was tasty. Doug & Debbie’s recipe from Venezuela won first place, Robin Daniel’s came in second, and Ed Mitchell’s third place.

We had a little incident with Hackman’s horse carriage and an attendees car but Farm Bureau Insurance taking care of everything.

This was one of the best attended events and fun was had by all!! Thank you all for attending and for making the holidays so much more fun!!!

Puppy Performance Trial Day, Saturday, Nov 19

The puppies had a great day of training Saturday at the Beechland Preserve. Many in attendance witnessed our hounds and puppies chasing foxes up close and personal, as we spent the morning foxhunting on foot. Thank you to our puppy sponsors who donated more than $1800 for the hounds: Mary Finney, Lisa Langenhennig, Kathy and Mark Giewant, Jeanine Hinson, Ed and Katherine Mitchell, Merri and Steve Musso, Christel and Doug Stanley, Tim Watson, and, of course, Jerel Johnson who sponsored the "best in show" for the day, Mischief.

And thank you, Jerel, for sharing your winnings with PAH! Kris G donated a delicious homemade breakfast buffet of soups and entrees with help from The Awesome Event Committee which included coordinator Merri Musso, Helen Bingham, Kathy Giewant, Lisa Langenhennig, Allison Harcourt, Theresa Gregory, Jeanine Hinson, Tim Watson. Thank you all for your hard work! Out of 8 total entries, the flask contest was won resoundingly by Sue Blackmore (Recipe coming next week). Anne Wilson Gregory won 2nd place with her Thanksgiving Margarita, and will end our enews with that recipe.

To make ONE single margarita:

2 ounces apple cider

1.5 ounces pear nectar

1.5 ounces gold tequila

1 ounce triple sec

Cinnamon stick garnish (Pete Sweet discovered that it enhances flavor if cinnamon stick steeps a bit)

Coat rim of glass in simple sugar liquid first; then press into cinnamon sugar.

Princess Anne Hunt Opening Day Nov 12, 2022

Our 2022-2023 season is off to a great start! We had a beautiful day and hosted 53 riders and about 100 guests. Tim Porter started us off with the Blessing of the Hounds and many people. Ed Mitchell led first flight, Jim Daniels 2nd flight, and Christine Sweet 3rd flight. Betsy Padgett put out a beautiful and delicious tailgate with her friends and help from our team and Sean O'Grady. Cate and Mike Macknight made a delicious breakfast.

A special thanks to the Tyler family for hosting and Annique and the Sherwood Forest team for their support, along with our event team for the day. This included: Judee Calkins, Robin Daniels, Annique Dunning, Mary Finney, Brian Gealey, Dee Dee Mausteller, Katherine Mitchell, Betsy Padget, David Perryman, Anne Robinson, Vanessa Roselli, Kay Tyler, Mark and Linda Wenger. Lastly, Robin Daniels provided a lot of great PAH merchandise for Opening Day!

2022 Princess Anne Hunter Pace is in the Books!

What a fantastic day for a ride in the hills of beautiful Charles City County, VA! With 90 riders and 27 teams! This was the largest turnout ever for PAH and as a qualifying event for the Virginia Fall Hunter Pace Series, it will count for year-end placings!

The event was held at the PAH Kennels with perfect footing and mother nature was kind to us this year with sunshine and cool weather! Leaves were in brilliant color making for a spectacular ride and lovely images!!! There were 4 divisions and ribbons awarded for the following:

Fastest time over fences
Optimum time over fences
Fastest time on the flat
Optimum time on the flat

Congratulations to ALL who completed the event! It was an exciting ~7 miles on well-marked trails through open farmland, river frontage, and woodlands in the heart of our hunt country.

As an enthusiastic partner in helping to preserve the historic character of Charles City, we are sharing with you some of the events that these special properties offer year-round. We hope these experiences will give you an even deeper appreciation for where we are privileged to ride.

Rivers Rest Marina & Resort--Visit Yogi Singh and team's resort where you can spend the weekend at the Inn; dine at the Blue Heron Restaurant; or enjoy the marina and amenities--all on the Chickahominy River.

Sherwood Forest--Plan to join us for a PAH member tour of Sherwood Forest led by Kay and William Tyler's daughter Frances on the afternoon of Sunday, January 8th. This tour will be inclusive of stories, recently researched by Frances, of the enslaved who lived there.

Historic Shirley-Check out their website HERE for a full calendar of of unique themed tours that Charles and Lauren Carter have put together, including Haunted Tours until Halloween; a Veterans Day tour; Sunset Tours, Holiday Candlelight tours, and more.

Upper Shirley Vineyard- Enjoy delicious wine at Suzy Dameron and son Tayloe's Upper Shirley Vineyard while listening to live music on Saturdays and Sundays through the end of the year from 12-3 pm. Special events will include an Artisan Market on Black Friday and Santa Brunch on 12/17 and 12/18. Event details and info about their new wine club are on the website HERE.

Historic Westover- You've perhaps enjoyed the grounds at Westover for Boxing Day and other hunts with Rob and Andrea Erda and Fred and Muschi Fisher. Consider bringing guests year-round to enjoy the grounds and gardens. They are open daily, 10am – 4:30pm. Admission is a small donation at the entry gate. Tours are Thursday, Oct 27 at 12:30pm and Friday, Oct 28 at 11am or you can schedule an interior tour by emailing Andrea at aerda@historicwestover.com.

Festival of Foxhunting 2022

The Festival of Foxhunting was a terrific success with almost 100 members and guests in attendance.

The morning began cool and bright then warmed up for all to enjoy the beginnings of autumn and a lively hound walk with Huntsman Martyn Blackmore and Sue Blackmore sharing with many of us who joined for their morning constitutional! Entertaining and educating us with facts about the history of foxhounds, training and introducing us to many of the super friendly hounds all wagging their sterns eagerly to engage with their supporters! Members were invited to join them for a hound walk (with or without their horse) on most days at 8 am. They just need 24 hour notice that you are coming.

Back at the kennels, Mark Wenger, our bartender extraordinaire, did not disappoint with well-appointed Stirrup Cup beverages and Claudia Sands lavished us with delicious snacks and Breakfast– all were invited to partake and did! (The Fox got a little carried away). Mark - you may have missed one....

Not only was this a fun and festive day, but an educational one as well! Merri Musso of Cedarview Farms and Allison Harcourt shared tips and help on getting both your horse and the rider ready for the season. She’s published a recent article outlining much of what was covered, you can read the full article on the PAH website.

Other speakers included: Horse Turnout, Guidelines and Grooming by Courtney Cohen and Angie Pfeiffer; Honorary Secretary Cynthia Long-Porter and Christine Long-Sweet, Chair of the Membership Committee, on Proper Attire in the Field and Masters Ed Mitchell and Travis Gibson on General Etiquette in the Hunt Field. Master Ed was especially encouraging to new folks that may be intimidated by all the traditions and sought to put minds at ease that this was meant to be fun, safe and inclusive!

Several vendors participated this year. Special thanks to Dreamshine, Greyhorse Tack, Fox Chasers and Ascent Equine Therapies for bringing their best deals to the Festival and helping get us all fitted and ready for the season! And a shout out to new PAH primary vendor Company Casuals who debuted their PAH logo apparel –all of which can be found on our website.

The highlight of the afternoon was our guest Huntsmen and Hounds! Martyn Blackmore shared insights and history, answered questions with humor and wisdom! Special guests and fellow breeders highlighted other hound breeds. We all enjoyed meeting Kami Bitting of De La Brooke Foxhounds with her Penn-Marydel Foxhounds; Charlotte Buttrick of Farminton Beagles and Jeff Eickler with his wonderful Bassett Hounds.

Many thanks to the Festival of Foxhunting Team--Sue and Martyn Blackmore, Courtenay Cohen, Mary Finney, Theresa Gregory, Allison Harcourt, Merri Musso, Angie Pfeiffer, Claudia Sands, Cynthia Long-Porter, Christine Sweet, Mark Wenger--and for Master Travis Gibson who served as coordinator.

Everyone received a Hunt Season booklet which was put together by Merri Musso and Marcy Molinaro and beautifully designed by Amy Zydel of eXpoBranders. This booklet we hope will serve as a reference for you all year so you can easily access updated contact information for leadership and as well as information about attire, etiquette in the field, membership and more.

A special shout out to the many advertisers! Be sure to thank them and patronize their businesses when you can. Additionally, members received their printed membership directory. If you were not able to join us, Honorary Secretary Cynthia Long-Porter will be mailing out these items to members and landowners soon.

Getting Horse and Rider Ready for Hunt Season, by Merri Musso

Here are just a few reminders to help get both you and your horse prepared for the upcoming Hunt Season which begins Saturday, October 1 with Member Cubbing. When you and horse are properly appointed, it makes for a safer, more enjoyable Hunt and shows respect for yourself, the landowner, the Masters, and the traditions of foxhunting. Waiting for the leaves to fall is too late!

Rider

Time to cut down on those summer sweets and umbrella drinks and get some core and cardio-vascular exercise. If we expect our horses to be fit, so should we. Biking, jogging, and walking out hounds at kennels (8 am most mornings!) are all a wake-up call to those muscles in summer mode. Yoga and pilates help strengthen the core and improve balance and flexibility. Check your hunt clothes and make sure they are clean, buttons and stitching are good and appropriate to fit your fabulous figure. Check out the attire section of the website HERE for reminders of what attire is appropriate for Cubbing Season beginning October 1, and the Formal Season beginning November 12.

Horse

Doing these suggestions will make for a more enjoyable hunt season for both horse and rider. Remember: the outside of the horse is good for the inside of the person!

Tack

Time to get that green mold off the tack and check for weak points and stitching. Make sure your saddle and girth fit your horse correctly and make adjustments due to weight changes. Correctly adjust your bridle and bit to your horse's needs. Thoroughly give your tack a good cleaning and oiling before the season starts. Cleaning your tack well now, makes for easier regular cleaning after each hunt. And don’t forget to get a thorough inspection of your horse trailer—where you store your tack to and from each meet!--so that you and your horse are sure to arrive safely.

HUNT SEASON PREP CHECKLIST

Rider:

-Exercise-bike, yoga, jog, walk out hounds

-Hunt clothes-clean, buttons, stitching and fit

-Fill out waiver which you can find HERE on the website

-Send waiver to Hunt Secretary Cynthia Long-Porter at cpirate04@yahoo.com or give to her at the Festival of Foxhunting on 9/25.

Horse:

-Vet checkup-teeth, shots, coggins, worming, lameness

-Clean up-mane, trim, shoes

-Exercise-AT LEAST 2x a week trotting hills, water, ditches, jumps

Tack:

-Check weak points, stitching

-Adjust bridle, bit and saddle

-Thoroughly clean and oil

-Inspect horse trailer, check tires, etc.

-Purchase a shiny red ribbon for your horse’s tail, if he/she kicks

How to Update Your Profile on PAH Website

We're preparing to print an updated member list that will be distributed at the Festival of Foxhunting on Sunday, September 25th!

Below, I have included a quick video explaining how to log in and update your profile. Many of our members don't know this, but you can also ADD A GALLERY of personal pictures that we encourage you to do - preferably of candid shots at events and scenery that you are willing to share with PAH - we may even have a competition and prize for best pics of the season!!! Make sure your images are in focus and preferably in a landscape/horizontal orientation.

To get into your profile, simply head over to princessannehunt.org and click on the red LOGIN button.
Then, use your email address and password to log in. If you are unsure, you can contact me, Amie Perryman at webmaster@princessannehunt.com or choose 'forgot password' to reset your password.
Once logged in, you will just see the website but there will be a 'person icon' (see video for clarification). Click on that little guy and choose "View Profile"
This is your personal information. Check it to be sure its correct.
To make changes, click on 'Edit Profile'
Don't forget to upload a profile image! We want to see your smiling face!
Save your changes.
