MEMBERSHIP NEWS

As responsible stewards of the Hunt, the Board has unanimously voted to increase annual dues in order to make necessary improvements to our kennels, barn and the Huntsman's housing as well to keep pace with the rising cost of living. This is the first increase to dues in over seven years and every effort was made to keep the increases at a nominal level.

The new dues schedule is as follows and will take effect for existing members after the PAH Annual Meeting in May 2020:

  • Family Membership - $450 per quarter (increase of $15/quarter)
  • Single Membership - $350 per quarter (increase of $15/quarter)
  • Hunt Supporter - $100 per quarter (increase of $5/quarter)

A cold but fun and informative day was had by those who turned up at the Beechland Foxhound Training Preserve this past Saturday. Those who did not attend, that was a shame as you missed a special, social event that you must plan on for next year.

A welcoming stirrup cup started the day off during which
Martyn "auctioned off" the puppies (thank you to all the competitive bidders) who were then attired in numbered vests for easier, long-distance identification.
Just Martyn and Sue were on horseback with the field members dressed up for the weather and walking.
Everyone got to hear hounds in full cry, as well as viewing plenty of healthy foxes, which gave the foot followers a new, totally different, perspective on hounds and hunting.

Hopefully, you have all got to see Melissa's excellent photographs that captured the day perfectly. melissawilliamsphotographs.smugmug.com

Once all the hounds were caught up and back in their trailer, everyone entered the Club House and were greeted by tables groaning with food and plenty of adult libations, thanks to the wonderful Kelley family!

"Potion" and "Martha" were named as joint winners of the best working puppy.
Franci and/or Hank were voted as having the tastiest hip flask concoction....well, maybe as no-one can really remember!

All proceeds and winnings were generously donated to the hounds which amounted to over $1,000. A great day!!

    “HEADED TO THE FIRST DRAW”
    24” X 36”, OIL ON BELGIAN LINEN

The winner of this painting was revealed at the Opening Meet breakfast at Indian Fields  Tavern on Saturday October 26th, 2019. Tim Coyne is the proud owner of this beautiful foxhunting piece of art.

Thank you to all that participated in our fund raising raffle: We sold a grand total of 72 tickets which yielded over $7,200.00!

A big thank you goes out to the volunteers that spent time in managing this project.

To Cynthia Long Porter - for her commitment in sending out tickets and overseeing finances.

To Marcy Molinaro, Mike Maddocks, Trace Carson and Ed Mitchell

    – for their help in the  promotion of the painting.

And to Lee Baskerville - for volunteering his time and talents for this successful fund raiser.  Lee is well known throughout the hunting community in Virginia and his works are represented in both public and private collections. Recognized by C. Hugh Hildesley, VP of Sotherby’s New York, as “the next Sir Alfred Munnings”, Baskerville combines his love of the outdoors with his academic training as a painter, to create this scene of “A mounted huntsman with hounds in a sun-soaked field”

Another friend of PAH passed away Thursday. Alan Diamonstein, of Newport News, was a former Delegate and a powerful lawmaker.
On a more personal note, he was Cherylle Lang's brother-in-law and a friend of Dave Chewning.

Dave would like to share the following with PAH members and friends:

"My good friend Alan passed away this morning, at his home, surrounded by family. He was a hunt member from 1994 to 2010

I first met Alan in the hunt field at North Bend. I was whipping-in that day and he needed help getting across a jump, that has not been there in years.
I rode over to help Alan and he asked me to lead him over the jump. I have always known Alan to be able to really think on his feet, as a good legislator is expected, but even Alan made a few bad choices: In spite of his bad choice that day, we both successfully got over the coop.

Alan always had a smile on his face, every time he was with his hunt friends. He was also most appropriately attired; another difference between the two of us.
I have visited with him on many occasions in recent years, after he had left the hunt, and his constant smile was always in place.

He will be sorely missed by Cherylle, Cindy, me and the entire PAH family.

    Dave Chewning
PAH Whipper-In and friend of Alan"

Alan's memorial service will be held Sunday October 20, 1:30pm, at the Alan and Beverly Diamonstein Concert Hall at the Ferguson Center for the Arts at CNU.

    What a fabulous Newcomer's Day!
A large group of first time fox hunters turned up; some had driven 2 hours to get to Dogham Farm and some had stabled overnight locally. After a pep talk during the stirrup cup (welcome for a few, needing liquid courage!) the 3 fields moved off for nearly 3 hours in their saddles. It was a perfectly paced day and everyone got to see, and hear, hounds at work. All horses behaved impeccably and all the riders heeded their instructions!
Many riders have promised to come back and one was overheard announcing that she was hooked!!
Thank you to all involved in putting this day together and ensuring it was a great success.

Our Presentation of Hounds at Sherwood Forest drew a good crowd of visitors, some of whom asked great questions regarding hunting and hounds.  It was a very hot and humid morning and "The Dream Team" were in full, formal livery but we survived! The hounds were a credit to us and were unruffled by the large group of people.  As you can see, they also enjoyed their meet and greet with one gorgeous little attendee, Mae Ramsay, who is just the cutest!  Another successful PR opportunity for PAH!

Charles City County Ruritan Club hosted their annual Steak Feast, September 19th, on the bank of the James River, on beautiful Berkeley Plantation. Established over 60 years ago, this civic organization help lead good causes, such as the Charles City Library campaign and scholarships for high school students. PAH were represented by Robin and Eric Strom and Sue and Martyn Blackmore as volunteer food servers. Eric and Martyn joined the male grillers who all cooked the "man-sized steaks", Sue and Robin had the less smoky and cooler job of dishing out bread rolls and salad! There were many community members and landowners in attendance plus a few PAH members. A fun evening! - Sue Blackmore

PAH were warmly greeted at Whippoorwill Farm during their VHSA Associate Horse Show, Sunday September 22nd. Merri Musso set up a superb booth, introducing the show riders to the history of fox hunting, and Master Travis set up refreshments and finger food for anyone visiting the booth. Assistants, Denise and Brooke, are fast becoming great ambassadors for PAH, expertly guided by Merri. If Clinton had not have been working, he would have been there too! Martyn and Sue brought along 4 hounds - Huckleberry, Daystar, Moonbeam and new girl, Breezy. They were excellently behaved (kept on leashes) and were happy to hang out in the shade of the pop up tents. They attracted many visitors, of all ages, and inspired many great questions regarding hunting and hounds. We all fell in love with one 8 year old young man who kept returning to hang out with the hounds. Respectful, full of knowledge and now a hound lover. Hopefully he and his 14 year old sister (who has the most laid-back paint pony) will come and hunt with us!! A wonderful few hours and an ideal PR opportunity for us. - Sue Blackmore
